Seminar detailed information:
Topic: Biogeochemical Cycling of Redox-Sensitive Metals in Oxygen Minimum
Date: October 27th, 15:00 CET
Moderator: Dr. Lise Artigue
Talk 1: Hydrothermal Impacts on Basin-Scale biogeochemical cycles
Prof. Christopher R German (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, WHOI, USA)
Abstract: The first global-scale study of ocean biogeochemical cycles (GEOSECS) concluded just before the first seafloor hydrothermal vents were discovered in 1977. For the next several decades, it was assumed that hydrothermal circulation in the deep dark ocean might only make minor, highly localized, contributions to global biogeochemical TEI cycles. Since the advent of the international GEOTRACES program that perspective has been revolutionized. I will discuss how our findings from GEOTRACES sections and, more recently, some GEOTRACES-inspired process studies, have helped re-shape our thinking.
Talk 2: Biogeochemical implications of widespread low-temperature hydrothermal flow
Dr. Laura Moore (University of Victoria, Canada)
Abstract: In this talk, I will highlight advances in detecting low-temperature hydrothermal flow and discuss the unique biogeochemical imprint of these systems on the water column.
