– New revelations on boundary scavenging in the North Pacific
|
Thorium (Th) and protactinium (Pa) are very efficient tracers of particle dynamics in the ocean. More particularly, their relative distributions inform on the intensity of “scavenging”, in other words, the processes that remove dissolved elements from the seawater by their precipitation or adsorption on particles…

– Analyzing rapidly, precisely and semi-automatically lead isotopes on variable volumes of seawater (up to 1000 ml)
|
Zurbrick and co-authors present a relatively fast (2.5–6.5 hours), semi-automated system to extract lead (Pb) from seawater, with few chemicals yielding low blanks. They also demonstrate that subsequent Pb isotopic analyses are more precise using a multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) than high resolution ICP-MS (HR ICP-MS)…

– New method for measuring simultaneously trace metal concentrations on a very small volume of seawater
|
An automated, on-line extraction, flow-injection inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method is presented by Lagerström and co-authors for simultaneous determination of manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in open ocean seawater samples…

– When ocean dynamic drives the land to ocean input of iron
|
Nishioka and co-authors demonstrate the pivotal role of tidal mixing in the Kuril Islands chain (KIC) for determining iron (Fe) supply to the euphotic zone of the Western Subartic Pacific. Indeed, Fe derived from sediments in the Sea of Okhotsk is discharged through the KIC into the intermediate water masses (~ 800 m) of the western North Pacific…

– Release of the GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product!
|
GEOTRACES is pleased to announce the release of its first GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product (IDP) at the 2014 Ocean Science meeting (23-28 February 2014, Honolulu, Hawaii, US).
The 2014 IDP will consist of a public on-line database (under registration) and a set of visual components (on-line interactive maps and a selection of 3D animations of GEOTRACES sections).
It will be presented in a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday 25 February at lunchtime (lunches will be provided). The Town Hall will include a brief presentation of the GEOTRACES programme and the IDP, followed by a presentation of selected scientific results. A question and answer session will close the meeting.
Visit us at SCOR booth at Ocean Science 2014!
GEOTRACES will also be present at the exhibition hall of the conference participating in a booth sponsored by the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR). The booth will be shared with SCOR, IMBER, SOLAS and SOOS. You are welcome to stop by and visit!
