Sea of Thorium repository

Dear colleagues,

Below we share information on a repository of Thorium-234 data (Sea of Thorium, https://www.seaofthorium.com/en). Scientists interested in sharing their data with Sea of Thorium should contact (seaofthorium@us.es).

Best regards,

Accurate assessment of the carbon export flux is crucial for estimating the magnitude of the biological pump, a critical component of the global carbon cycle.  However, this flux is challenging to measure and therefore complementary approaches are usually combined to estimate it. The use of radioactive pair disequilibrium, particularly Th-234 / U-238, is one of the most popular methods.

The Sea of Thorium repository (https://www.seaofthorium.com/en) is an initiative led by colleagues from the Universidad de Sevilla and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to create an open, global, standardised, and comprehensive repository of all existing Th-234 data in the ocean. It contains an extensive dataset that brings together all available observations in a robust, consistent and accessible format.

Following a year of extensive testing, the Sea of Thorium is now open to the scientific community. The repository aims to serve as a dynamic forum for the exchange of ideas, research and data among the thorium enthusiasts and beyond.

Researchers can contribute with their datasets, report any errors they might find in the compilation and share new applications of their data. A careful curation will be conducted before uploading to the database and a DOI will be assigned to your dataset. A temporary embargo on the data can also be requested.
