2026 Call for Applications for the GEOTRACES Early Career Scientist Committee

GEOTRACES (www.geotraces.org) is an international programme which aims to improve the understanding of biogeochemical cycles and large-scale distribution of trace elements and their isotopes in the marine environment. Scientists from approximately 35 nations have been involved in the programme, which is designed to study all major ocean basins.

GEOTRACES is seeking to recruit 7 early career professionals to join its Early Career Scientist (ECS) Committee, established in August 2024 and currently comprising 22 members. Learn more about the committee here.

Position Description: The GEOTRACES ECS Committee serves as a strategic and operational body to coordinate and champion early career activities within the framework of GEOTRACES science under the supervision of the GEOTRACES Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) and the International Project Office (IPO). The committee primarily conducts its activities virtually and generally meets every two months. Members are expected to contribute to the organisation of early career related activities, such as online seminars, sessions at international conferences. Newly appointed members will serve for a term of two years.

From each new cohort a co-chair will be selected, who is expected to work with the standing co-chair in organising ECS activities, attend annual GEOTRACES SSC meetings, as well as other relevant SSC executive meetings.  Co-chairs of the GEOTRACES ECS committee represent GEOTRACES in the UN Decade ECOP programme and attend annual GEOTRACES SSC meetings.

The new members of the ECS committee will be selected by the current members of the ECS Committee and recommended to the GEOTRACES SSC for appointment to the Committee. Please indicate if you are willing to serve as co-chair in the application form. Once the new members are selected, a meeting will be hold to elect a new co-chair from those who have indicated so.

Requirements: Applicants should have completed their PhD, but be no more than 10 years from PhD (not counting time for career interruptions), and should possess knowledge and experience relevant to GEOTRACES. Candidates from developing countries, and backgrounds underrepresented in marine science, are encouraged to apply.

Deadline for applications is 3rd July 2026. The GEOTRACES Scientific Steering Committee will review and select candidates by early September 2026.
