São Paulo School of Advanced Science in Ocean Literacy Fellowships

We are pleased to announce the São Paulo School of Advanced Science in Ocean Literacy (SPSAS-OL), a prestigious academic program for 100 PhD students and early-career researchers from around the world. For more details, including eligibility criteria and the application form, please visit:

Funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the SPSAS-OL brings together leading researchers from Brazil and abroad to teach and mentor participants through a multicultural and interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge.

Over two immersive weeks, participants will engage in lectures, workshops, and discussions. They will also take part in the Ocean Literacy Festival, a parallel event fostering public engagement and outreach.

The program offers a unique opportunity to collaborate, network, and advance discussions on ocean literacy science across diverse dimensions, including:

  • Education
  • Communication
  • Knowledge systems
  • Cultural connections
  • Sustainable blue economy
  • Climate resilience
  • Justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion

Eligibility:
Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from all disciplines related to ocean literacy are welcome to apply. Given the transdisciplinary nature of the event, a limited number of knowledge holders and professionals in environmental and social sciences, sustainability, education, and science-policy interfaces may also be selected.

Participant Selection:
A total of 100 participants will be selected, aiming for geographic and gender diversity:

●     50 from Brazil:

o   Up to 25 from São Paulo State

o   At least 25 from other Brazilian states (approx. 5–7 per region)

●      50 international participants, preferably from different countries, including:

o   At least 25 from the Global South, distributed as follows:

▪       8 from South America

▪       8 from Africa

▪       8 from Asia/Australia

▪       8 from the Caribbean

▪       8 from North America

▪       10 from Europe

📅 August 19th to September 1st, 2025

⏱️ Application Deadline: May, 24th


The program is fully supported (transportation, shared accommodation, and meals) by FAPESP. Self-funded or partially self-funded participants are also welcome, to broaden participation.
