The South African polar research vessel Agulhas II is sailing for a three-month return voyage to Antarctica. On board, Susanne Fietz (Stellenbosch University, South Africa) and Phoebe Lam (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA) along with a team of South African GEOTRACES scientists will sample iron from the Southern Ocean and conduct deck-incubation experiments in order to study the role of iron on photosynthesis in phytoplankton. This will shed light on controls on the Southern Ocean carbon dioxide uptake from the atmosphere.
The cruise will also be used to further cross-calibrate the South African sampling system and protocol for iron measurements using cross over stations and inter-laboratory calibration.
