The 2025 GEOTRACES Summer School was a great success!
Held from 17 to 21 November 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa, the 2025 GEOTRACES Summer School welcomed 34 students and 19 lecturers for five days of intensive training in the marine biogeochemistry of trace elements and their isotopes.
The Summer School was organised by Hélène Planquette (LEMAR, France), Susanne Fietz (Stellenbosch University, South Africa), Tommy Ryan-Keogh (NOC, UK) and Ryan Cloete (Stellenbosch University, South Africa). It welcomed PhD students and early-career researchers and provided the skills and knowledge needed to understand the biogeochemical cycles of trace metals and their isotopes, emphasising the value of combining multiple tracers and parameters (including omics) when studying these cycles. The programme offered hands-on training in the tools, approaches, and concepts central to the GEOTRACES programme, while helping participants see how their work fits within the wider international GEOTRACES community.
A highlight of the week was the launch webinar of the 2025 GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product, held on 20 November during the Summer School.
A warm thank-you to all organisers, lecturers, and participants, as well as to the sponsors CNRS, the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR), the Ambassade de France en Afrique du Sud, au Lesotho et au Malawi, and Campus France en Afrique du Sud for their support.
