NEW SEAWATER CONSENSUS VALUES FROM XIAMEN UNIVERSITY (MEL):
The State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science at Xiamen University (MEL) have recently prepared a batch of seawater reference materials collected from the surface (5 m, SCS-SSW) and deep layers (1000 m, SCS-DSW) of the South China Sea for trace element analysis. The seawater reference materials were collected and bottled in 500 mL HDPE bottles under a trace metal clean condition. They are pleased to share these seawater reference materials with the international GEOTRACES community and also request that users report their values to help establish community consensus values for trace element concentrations. The consensus values will be released once sufficient data have been provided by participating laboratories.
Anyone wishing to request seawater reference materials may contact Dr. Yihua Cai (email: yihua_cai@xmu.edu.cn) and Ms. Nan Zhang (email: zhnan@xmu.edu.cn) at Xiamen University. Since shipping liquid materials involves complex custom clearance procedures, they have consign the logistics service to a third-party courier. The seawater reference materials will be distributed free of charge; however, applicants will be responsible for logistics expenses such as freight, customs clearance, taxes, etc. For further details or inquiries, please contact Dr. Yihua Cai and Ms. Nan Zhang.
SEAWATER CONSENSUS MATERIAL GSP AND GSC:
There is no longer any GSP or other offshore reference materials. There a few GSC material remaining, which can be sent out on request (see below).
The community needs to develop consensus values for the GEOTRACES standards GSP (2009 GEOTRACES Pacific surface seawater) and GSC (2009 GEOTRACES coastal surface seawater), since we have no samples left to send out for the original consensus materials. For those of you who have received GSC and GSP, please report those values to Jim Moffett at jmoffett@usc.edu. These reported values are held in confidence by Moffett but are vital for our community.
If you require GSC samples, please email Moffett with a request. To save time, include a Fedex account number with your initial request. If you prefer DHL, please set up the shipment from your end (Moffett will provide you with pickup instructions) and email Moffett a copy of the DHL Waybill with bar code.
While there is no charge for the samples themselves, they were costly to procure. Receipt constitutes an obligation to report values.
CONSENSUS REFERENCE MATERIALS FOR AEROSOLS (Arizona Test Dust, ATD):
Aerosol chemistry, solubility, and flux to the oceans are key parameters in the GEOTRACES Science Plan. Intercalibration is essential for producing aerosol data that will be accepted into any GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product. Please read this document to learn about the steps to follow for intercalibration as well as for information on how to obtain a sample of the underway effort to utilize Arizone Test Dust (ATD) as a potential “consensus reference material”.
