SUMMARY:An Ocean of Opportunity
DESCRIPTION:An Ocean OpportunityDates: September 16-20\, 2019 Location: Honolulu Convention Center\, HI For further information: www.oceanobs19.net\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe organizers of OceanObs’19 are soliciting abstracts of Community White Papers describing aspirations for the coming decade from all interested groups. The Community White Papers should promote international collaboration and large-scale sustained ocean observing efforts\, and address one or ideally more of the seven (anticipated) themes (Discovery\, Ecosystem Health & Biodiversity\, Climate Variability & Change\, Water\, Food\, & Energy Security\, Pollution & Human Health\, Hazards & Maritime Safety\, and Blue Economy) and two crosscutting themes on data information system and ocean observing governance topics. \nBased on the contributed abstracts of Community White Papers\, the OceanObs’19 Program Committee will solicit full Community White Papers to be submitted by end of September 2018. The Program Committee may recommend that authors of particular abstracts collaborate and merge the concepts described in separate abstracts to develop a joint Community White Paper. The papers will be peer-reviewed and published in an open access journal before the conference.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe seek abstract contributions that provide solutions to build and enhance connections between end users and ocean observations in relation to one or more of the conference themes.  Additionally\, abstracts should focus on (one or more of the following):   \n\nStrategies to address social and economic needs including the development of the Blue Economy;\nEmerging science concepts that require multidisciplinary sustained observations (i.e. biological\, biogeochemical\, physical\, geological\, social and economic\, etc.);\nThe value of existing ocean observations and their potential relevance in an evolving ocean observing system;\nThe requirements for sustaining and enhancing ocean observing capabilities;\nThe development of new observing technologies and networks\, including identification of new transformative directions for ocean observing;\nAdvances in open data\, information technology\, and governance systems;\nObservational or observation-model synthesis;\nThe need for improved processes to better support research and operations;\nInnovations in engagement with end-user communities.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCONFERENCE INFORMATION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe main goal of the conference will be to further develop effective strategies for a sustained\, multidisciplinary and integrated ocean observing system\, and to better connect user communities and observers. End user communities include operational users\, national and local authorities as well as researchers\, from the public and private sectors.  Engagement with international user communities can take diverse forms\, including closer interaction to better target their needs for ocean observing networks and derived products while better informing management decisions. OceanObs’19 will continue the tradition of building the vision of ocean users and observers.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBACKGROUND:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs part of the decadal conference series\, OceanObs’19 will galvanize the ocean observing community ranging from scientists to end users. OceanObs’19 seeks to improve response to scientific and societal needs of a fit-for-purpose integrated ocean observing system\, for better understanding the environment of the Earth\, monitoring climate\, and informing adaptation strategies as well as the sustainable use of ocean resources.   OceanObs’99 resulted in an internationally coordinated system for physical climate and ocean carbon observations. OceanObs’09 expanded the range of communities working together to undertake more comprehensive ocean observations and led to the Framework for Ocean Observing. OceanObs’19 will seek to advance these outcomes by extending its reach the full spectrum of ocean communities.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExpected Schedule\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDec 18\, 2018: Release of call for abstracts of Community White Papers March 15\, 2018: Due date for abstract submission March 15 – April 30\, 2018: Program Committee reviews and consolidates Community White Paper list April 30\, 2018: Invitations to group authors for Community White Papers September 30\, 2018: Community White Papers due\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor any additional information\, please reach out to info@oceanobs19.net or check out www.oceanobs19.net for up-to-date info!

SUMMARY:2017 Gordon Research Conference on Chemical Oceanography
DESCRIPTION:2017 Gordon Research Conference (GRC) on Chemical OceanographyDates: 23-28 July 2017 Location: Colby Sawyer College\, New London\, NH \n There will also be a Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) for graduate students and postdocs associated with the meeting. The GRS will be held at the same site July 22-23\, 2017. Please see their website for more information (https://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?id=16981). \nDeadlines: \n– GRS SPEAKER ABSTRACT DEADLINE: April 22\, 2017– GRS MEETING APPLICATION: June 24\, 2017– GRC MEETING APPLICATION: June 25\, 2017 \nFor more information\, and to submit your application\, see: \nGRC: https://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?id=11096GRS: https://www.grc.org/programs.aspx?id=16981 \n \n2017 GORDON RESEARCH CONFERENCE (GRC) ON CHEMICAL OCEANOGRAPHY \nSynthesizing Multifaceted Data in Chemical Oceanography \nJuly 23-28\, 2017\, Colby-Sawyer College\, New London\, NH \nChair: Karen Casciotti \nVice Chair: Mak Saito \nChemical Oceanography is a multidisciplinary science that integrates research across elements\, environments\, and platforms on a variety of space and time scales using a multitude of approaches. Themes highlighting the fundamentally interdisciplinary nature of the field have remained at the heart of the GRC in Chemical Oceanography for almost 50 years. The meeting in 2017 will advance these themes and highlight synthesis of multifaceted data in Chemical Oceanography. Highlights will include new methods of data collection\, visualization\, analysis\, and modeling that allow novel insights and connections to be made in all phases of interdisciplinary work. Synthesizing data on multiple elements\, with different chemical behaviors and controls allows us to understand key processes that the control the distributions of elements in seawater and marine sediments\, as well as to understand how shifts in those distributions may reflect changes at the processes level. New advances in integration of a wide array of measurements on a variety of space and time scales allow scaling from detailed regional studies to global processes in the past\, present\, and future ocean and create an integrative understanding of Chemical Oceanography whose whole is greater than the sum of its parts. \nThe biennial GRC in Chemical Oceanography seeks to spur discussion and synthesis of ideas at the leading edge of research within Chemical Oceanography\, with an emphasis on presentation of new\, unpublished data\, interpretations\, and ideas in a strictly ‘off the record’ format. All attendees are encouraged to present a poster on their work. \nNew this year\, we will offer a ‘Power Hour’ on Monday afternoon. This is an opportunity for attendees to get together in an informal setting to discuss the challenges facing women in science\, and to address those challenges through mentoring and open discussion. This discussion is open to all attendees. We are looking for volunteers to help moderate the discussion. If you are interested\, please contact the GRC Chair (kcasciotti@stanford.edu). \nPlease note that the GRC offers partial support for faculty from predominantly undergraduate institutions (PUI)\, researchers from developing nations (through the Carl Storm International Diversity Fellowship)\, and underrepresented minority participants who are US citizens or permanent residents and are attending a GRC or GRS for the first time through the Carl Storm Underrepresented Minority Fellowship Program. We encourage applicants who are eligible to contact the GRC Chair (kcasciotti@stanford.edu) for more information. \n2017 GORDON RESEARCH SEMINAR (GRS) ON CHEMICAL OCEANOGRAPHY \nHow Chemistry Gives Insight into Ocean Processes \nJuly 22-23\, 2017\, Colby-Sawyer College\, New London\, NH \nChairs: Claire Till and Hilary Palevsky \nThe Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) on Chemical Oceanography\, held in the two days immediately preceding the GRC\, is a unique forum for graduate students\, postdocs\, and other scientists with comparable levels of experience and education to present and exchange new data and cutting-edge ideas. The GRS aims to allow these early career scientists to present and discuss their research with their peers in a GRC-type atmosphere\, in the absence of the more senior cadre. The focus of this meeting is chemical tracers providing insight into oceanic processes. Tracers are widely used in both observational and experimental oceanography for exploring many types of processes; we hope that all scientists in chemical oceanography will be able to find this theme applicable to their work. In addition to oral and poster presentations by the early-career participants\, the GRS co-chairs have also invited a small panel of speakers to discuss career track and professional development topics pertinent to junior members of the field. Coupling the GRS with the GRC will greatly amplify the educational and professional experience of the students/postdocs\, and will likely improve their ability to communicate their research at the subsequent GRC. \nThe program for the GRS in Chemical Oceanography will be developed by inviting speakers and discussion leaders from abstracts submitted by April 22\, so we encourage all graduate students and postdocs planning to attend the GRS to submit an application by this deadline. Some funding will be available for graduate students and postdocs attending both the GRS and GRC. If the meeting cost is a barrier to your attendance\, please contact the chairs to request additional need-based support. \nChild and Family Care Resources: The Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) provides detailed information for each conference site on the GRC website. Although GRC does not directly provide child care services\, attendees are welcome to have guests (including spouses\, children\, nannies and babysitters) accompany them to the conference. GRC also offers an alternative off-site registration fee at all conferences to accommodate those with special family care needs (the off-site fee includes the conference and all meals but enables attendees to book their own accommodations). The GRC website includes information on nearby off-site accommodations and links to area organizations\, that can assist attendees with locating licensed child care providers and daycare services. Please note that Colby Sawyer College also offers a daily recreational camp for children (ages 6-12). \n

SUMMARY:14th Swiss Geoscience Meeting
DESCRIPTION:14th Swiss Geoscience Meeting Dates: 18 – 19 November 2016 Location: Geneva\, Switzerland \nFind further information below or visit the following website: http://www.geoscience-meeting.ch/sgm2016 \n  \nOn Friday 18th\, \nKeynote presentations will focus on this year’s theme “Time in Geosciences: Knowledge for a new beginning”. Four keynote speakers will present their research covering a wide range of geoscientific topics. Klaus Mezger (University of Bern) and Andrew Knoll (Harvard University) will take us far back to the origins of Earth and Life on Earth in deep time\, unlocking the fundamental aspects of the physical and biological parameters underpinning the functioning of the Earth’s system. Edouard Bard (College de France\, CEREGE\, University Aix-Marseille\, CNRS) will focus on timing and rates of environmental changes in our recent past\, extracting lessons from the Holocene. The symposium will conclude with a presentation by Ulrike Niemeier (Max Planck Institute for Meteorology) who will discuss how rates of geological processes inform current geoengineering approaches in the context of adaptation to climate change. \nOn Saturday 19th\, \n22 scientific symposia will cover the diverse spectrum of current research in geoscience\,encompassing the lithosphere\, the hydrosphere\, the cryosphere\, the biosphere\, the atmosphere and the anthroposphere. \nThe SGM also provides the ideal environment to foster informal contacts and discussion among scientists\, in particular during the Swiss Geoscience Party on Friday evening (Campus Biotech) but also at the poster sessions in the main hall of the venue on Saturday. Two poster sessions are scheduled withthe authors will be present for active discussion and feedback. \nCONTRIBUTIONS: \nDeadline for abstract submission is Wednesday August 31st\, 2016. \nDepending on the number and subject of abstracts submitted\, proposed sessions may be merged or new ones created. Abstracts will be initially assigned to the session indicated by the authors at the time of abstract submission. \nAbstracts should be submitted electronically following the instructions on the SGM2016 websitehttp://www.geoscience-meeting.ch/sgm2016 \n  \nREGISTRATION: \nDeadline for registration is Friday October 21st\, 2016. \nRegistration and Payments should be made electronically following the instructions on the SGM2016 website.Registration fee is SFr. 55.- (SFr. 35.- for students /PhD students). An extra SFr 20.- will be charged for the Geoscience Party (SFr 15.- for students).Onsite registrations will be charged an extra CHF 20.- \nSYMPOSIA at SGM 2016: \nWe kindly invite you to submit abstracts for oral presentations or posters addressing the following subjects: \n1 Structural Geology\, Tectonics and Geodynamics2 Mineralogy\, Petrology\, Geochemistry3 Gemmology4 Palaeontology5 The Sedimentary Record of Tectonic\, Climatic and Environmental Change From Deep to Modern Times6 Stratigraphy7 Timing of Earth Processes: from dates to rates8 Rock mechanics\, Rock physics and Geophysics9 Subsurface Geology & Geo-Energy10 Open Session in Geomorphology11 Quaternary environments: landscapes\, climate\, ecosystems\, human activity during the past 2.6 million years12 Cryospheric Sciences13 Hydrology\, Limnology and Hydrogeology14 Environmental Biogeochemistry of Trace Elements15 Linking Trace Element and Carbon Biogeochemistry16 Trace elements in aquatic ecosystems: from legacy to emerging pollutants17 Atmospheric Processes and Interactions with the Biosphere18 Phenology and seasonality19 Earth Observation addressing key Earth System processes20 Geoscience and Geoinformation – From data acquisition to modelling and visualisation21 Development and governance of geo-energies. SUMMARY:32th International Conference on Environmental Geochemistry and Health
DESCRIPTION:32th International Conference on Environmental Geochemistry and HealthDates: 4-8 July 2016Location: Brussels\, Belgium \nFor further information: segh-brussels.sciencesconf.org \nRelevant Session description: \nThis theme aims at providing a better understanding of the near surface environment where complex interactions between rock\, soil\, water\, air\, and living organisms that regulate sources\, sinks\, geochemical cycles and mobilization processes of life-sustaining resources. In addition to well-recognized contaminants (e.g. Pb\, Zn\, Hg)\, a range of trace elements\, including platinum group metals\, certain rare earth elements\, and Y\, Nb\, Ta\, Ga\, In\, Tl\, Ge and Te\, are increasingly exploited and emitted due to their use in new technologies in the fields of communication\, mobility and energy. Limited resources and supplies\, make most of these elements technology-critical elements (TCE) of strategic importance\, and initiatives at national and international levels are therefore underway to secure their availability in the coming years. Because of their (i) increasing use\, (ii) poorly understood biogeochemical behavior and (iii) potential toxicity\, TCE and other rare trace elements are emerging inorganic contaminants of substantial concern. \nSpecial attention will be paid to trace element and isotope analyses and monitoring to detect and model bioavailability and bioaccessibility of such metals and other pollutants in the environment and the associated risks to human health. In addition\, we welcome papers focusing on models helping speciation of key geochemical elements in aquatic and terrestrial environments. \nThis session is supported by the COST Action TD1470 NOTICE –Network On Technology-Critical Elements: From Environmental Processes To Human Health Threats (http://www.costnotice.net/)
