SUMMARY:2nd GEOTRACES Intercalibration Workshop
DESCRIPTION:2nd GEOTRACES Intercalibration WorkshopDates: 13 – 14 December 2008Location: Larkspur Hotel Union Square\, San Francisco\, California\, USA \nOverview \nThe goal for this workshop will be to go over the results we have to date and discuss them…what works and what does not – the actual Intercalibration! We anticipate this will be 2/3 of the meeting time. The remaining 1/3 will be planning Cruise 2 in the North Pacific. So\, everyone needs to plan on getting as many analyses as possible completed before the workshop\, ideally by November so that you can discuss the results amongst your colleagues measuring the same suite of dissolved and/or particulate TEIs. We can only accommodate 45 participants at the workshop\, with the elemental coordinators having the most priority (they have to attend)\, and perhaps 2-3 others that are in their group (e.g.\, the nutrient group should have Karen Casciotti\, Albert Colman\, and Mark Brzezinski at the meeting); the remaining spots would be for coordinators on the 2nd Cruise who did not participate on Cruise 1. The plan would be for each elemental coordinator to present the overall results to date (maybe 20-30 minutes covering the Intercalibration results and the vertical profiles) and then the entire workshop would discuss the results\, in particular looking for trends\, etc that match their own. At the end\, we’ll spend time synthesizing all of the results – what worked and what didn’t. This would then lead into Cruise 2 planning\, with additional topics to be included (e.g.\, speciation\, sample storage\, etc). \nVenue \nThe meeting will be held at the Larkspur Hotel Union Square\, 524 Sutter Street | San Francisco\, California 94102.www.larkspurhotelunionsquare.com \nOther information \nAnnouncement of the Workshop. \n

SUMMARY:U.S. GEOTRACES Pacific Section Implementation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:U.S. GEOTRACES Pacific Section Implementation WorkshopDates: 1 – 3  October 2008Location: University of Southern California\, Los Angeles\, California\, USA \nFor further information: http://www.usgeotraces.com/html/pacific.html  \nThe Report of the Workshop is available to download. \nOverview \nThe US GEOTRACES Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) is beginning to develop implementation plans for the initial sections in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans\, and invites community involvement  in the process. Workshops will be held this fall to draft implementation plans for these sections:Atlantic 22 – 24 September\, 2008; WHOIPacific 1 – 3 October\, 2008; University of Southern California \nIn preparation for these workshops\, the SSC solicits recommendations as well as expressions of interest from individuals who wish to participate in the development of the implementation plans. \nThe implementation plans will be reviewed by the SSC and by NSF program officers. Once approved\, the plans will serve as the basis for proposals to NSF to support research on each section. \nDownload the full announcement. \nObjectives \nThere are two important objectives of the Pacific Basin Workshop.  \nThe highest priority is to develop a plan for a meridional section from Hawaii to the Gulf of Alaska that could become the first GEOTRACES cruise in the event that an Ocean Class ship is not available in the North Atlantic for us in 2010. \nSecondly\, we must design a feasible plan for two sections in the Pacific.  One is the meridional section described above\, while the other is a zonal section (approximately) from the Peru coastline to the East Pacific Rise\, followed by an WNW transect along the axis of the 3 He plume. We will examine the feasibility and logistics of conducting these sections as a coordinated effort in 2013.  As an alternative\, we will consider staging these sections separately in 2012 and 2014. \nThe meeting will enable us to evaluate what we can and cannot accomplish in these sections\, especially regions where we will encounter strong concentration gradients in core parameters over small distances.  What sampling intensity is realistic over these gradients? What sampling might be best left for a process study? \nA principal consideration of our logistical planning will be full and meaningful integration of the trace element and isotope parameters\, leading to complimentary data sets that will fulfill the core missions of the program.  Progress made on the intercomparison cruise will be an important part of the planning process. \nConvenors \nJames Moffet and Chris German. \nAgenda \nThe Agenda of the Workshop is available to download. \nParticipants List \nThe Participants List is available to download. \nOther information \nPlease\, visit the Workshop web site.

SUMMARY:GEOTRACES Western Pacific Regional Workshop
DESCRIPTION:GEOTRACES Western Pacific Regional WorkshopDates: 25 – 27 August 2005Location: Xiamen\, China \nWebsite of the Workshop: http://mel.xmu.edu.cn/meeting/meeting0508/General_Information.htm \n  \nOverview \n \nDeveloping a full understanding of the distribution and biogeochemical behavior of trace elements and their isotopes (TEIs) in seawater has the potential to provide unique insights into a wide range of oceanic processes. It will provide\, for instance\, understanding of the role that limiting micronutrients play in regulating ecosystem structure and oceanic production\, and it will elucidate the mechanisms controlling the fate of contaminants added to the ocean by human activities. Certain TEIs\, particularly natural radionuclides\, can also be exploited to constrain rates of key processes regulating the marine carbon cycle. Other TEIs provide valuable insight into the mean velocity field and mixing processes in the ocean on timescales that are not readily amenable to direct measurements by more conventional methods. Furthermore\, TEI distributions in marine sediments and other geological archives yield vital clues about an array of environmental conditions in the past (e.g.\, ocean productivity\, circulation patterns and rates\, ecosystems structure\, continental weathering\, hydrothermal activity\, ocean anoxia\, etc.).  Recent advances in clean sampling protocols and in analytical techniques provide unprecedented capabilities for measuring a wide range of TEIs in the ocean. The potential afforded by these new advances has\, however\, not yet been fully realized\, in large part because of a lack of coordinated research efforts in this area of biogeochemistry since the GEOSECS program in the early 1970s. With the definition of an increasing number of high priority research questions\, and the availability of analytical methodologies that permit sampling at higher spatial and temporal density\, the community of marine biogeochemists believes that the time is right to mount a major international research program to study the global marine biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and their isotopes. As such\, an international program to study the marine biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and isotopes (GEOTRACES) is under active planning.  \n In the above overall context\, a regional workshop is planned to be held between August 25-27 in Xiamen\, China. The themes of the workshop are sought to be:  \n\nTo examine the potential to form a China National Geotraces program\nTo examine the potential to form an Asian regional Geotraces network\nTo determine the scope of a China National Geotraces program\nTo examine the mechanism of regional and international collaboration within the scope of Geotraces\nTo discuss a “roadmap” to implement Chinese/regional country’s Geotraces program including the potential for an open ocean transect \nTo launch a Chinese Geotraces program\, emphasis would be placed initially on coastal research relying on existing strength. Some of the Geotraces objectives can benefit from ongoing time-series coastal transects such as: \n\n1) P/N transect in the East China Sea. Potential questions to examine include river sources under anthropogenic forcing (dams) and contribution from Asian dust. \n2) P/D transect (from Pearl River to Dongsha island) in the South China Sea as well as time series station such as SEATS (South East Asian Time Series Station) in the South China Sea (SCS). SCS is oligotrphic\,encompassing a shelf and a deep basin (upper to 5000 m) Potentially important issues include paleo proxies\, export production in the overall context of carbon cycles\, micronutrients and its influences on primary productivity (impact from Asian dust?) and on nitrogen fixation (a potential site with significant N fixation). SCS is also a good test site for paleo-studies and TEIs have every power to tackle such questions.\n\n\n\nAt this stage\, China will seek international assistance and collaboration to develop infrastructures and basic techniques in particularly clean techniques that are essential for trace element and isotope studies. China Geotraces program will be exploring possibilities for open ocean research\, especially the possibility of involving research vessels such as Snow Dragon\, Ocean #1\, DongFangHong # 2. There is a potential that Chinese Academics of Science will be sponsoring such open cruises that will provide sampling platforms for China and international Geotraces program. \n Agenda \nThe Agenda of the workshop is available to download. \n  \nAbstracts \nThe Abstracts of the Workshop are available to download. \n  \nParticipant List \nThe participant list is available to download. \n  \nOther information \nVisit the Workshop website for further information.
