BioGEOTRACES is an opportunistic programme of biological measurements capitalising on global coverage and trace-metal measurements of the GEOTRACES programme. This programme is not at the core of the GEOTRACES mission, but has the full support of the International GEOTRACES Steering Committee.
Mission
To collect information on phytoplankton distributions and activity in relation to trace element distributions on an unprecedented global scale by utilising the research platforms of GEOTRACES cruises. Specifically, a global survey of the molecular phylogeny of biogeochemically important phytoplankton groups which have high metal quotas (N fixers, coccolithophores, picophytoplankton, diatoms) to help us address the question of which environmental drivers control their biogeographical distributions.
